Litter Training Rabbits

This is how her kennel is set up

This is how her kennel is set up

When i got my rabbit i was told that she was litter trained and i set up the litter box the way they told me to and put it in the opposite corner from the food dish. her food dish has a place for pellets in the front and a hay rack at the back. Her litter box has paper pellets on the bottom and a layer of hay on top, which is how they told me to set it up. The problem is that she is pooping and peeing around the food dish not in it just around it on the floor of her kennel and no where near the liter box. is this because of the hay? What do you suggest?

Thank You
Bobbie

Litter training Rabbits

I did put some of her droppings in the litter box and she is using it regularly now. I have let her out in the res of the house and she always goes back to the litter box to do her duty, I have not found any dropping or wet spots in the rest of the house!!!

I was given 2 rabbits in their own cages & told the female, "Luna" was housebroke & would use a litter box. I placed one inside the cage, opposite from her feeding area and i think she sees it as her bedroom! Will try moving it and see what happens..thanks for the advice & tips on here! Also, how do i find out the breeds that they may be? I believe the male, "batman", may be a rare one that is threatened..Blanc de Hotot... he is all white w/silky shimmering coat and has black rings around both eyes. He also does have a small smattering of black lines between his ears too though which would make him uneligible for showing according to what I've read so far!

A lot of rabbits do their business in the same corner as the feeder, others choose a different corner. If you make the litter box too comfortable she may have decided this is her bedroom. Try placing some of her droppings in the litter box and move it to a different corner to see if she gets the idea.

Also contact the previous owner and ask if she was really litter trained or if they did like many others and just used a droppings pan. If they insist that she really was trained to use the litter box ask them to look at your setup and see if they can make a suggestion.
