Pet Rabbit Toys

Many people are surprised when they find out how playful rabbits can be. In fact, they appreciate pet rabbit toys to play with so they don't get bored.

You could go and buy a lot of fancy plastic and wood toys for your pet, but why? Just like children who clamor for that expensive toy and when you finally break down and buy it, they often discard the fancy stuff to play with the box. So save your money and look around the house.

Cardboard

Rabbits love cardboard. Many cardboard items make great pet rabbit toys. They chew on it, toss it around and have a great time with it. Give your pet the tubes from paper towel and toilet paper rolls and they'll have loads of fun. To make it even more interesting, stuff the toilet paper tube tightly with hay and let them have fun unstuffing it.

Boxes are fun, too. If you get a big box in the mail, cut a few rabbit-sized holes in it and let your bunny play. They love to have a place to hide. Cardboard concrete forms make great tunnels for your pet.

Paper and Other Stuff

A box full of shredded paper can give your pet hours of fun. While they're out running around the living room, set up a grocery sack so it is open but on its side. Rabbits love them as much as cats do.

Empty tuna fish cans make great pet rabbit toys. If you have one of those can openers that don't leave a sharp edge, you can give clean, empty cans to your rabbit. They will toss it around and make all sorts of noise.

Got leftover plastic eggs from Easter? Put a little rice inside and glue them shut. The egg doesn't have an edge, so your rabbit can't bite it. Instead, they'll roll it all over the cage, delighting in the noise made by the rice.

Clean chunks of lumber can be fun for your pet to chew on and toss about.

Untreated wicker baskets can be great fun. Check out your local craft store and see what they have to offer in untreated wicker or grape vines. Let your rabbit play with one of those small straw whisk brooms. They'll have a great time nibbling on it and tossing it.

Look in the pet section and get those straw balls meant for hamster houses. These offer fun textures for your rabbit. Dried pine cones are lots of fun for your rabbit to toss in the air.

If you have an apple tree, you can give them freshly cut branches as long as the tree has not been sprayed. Rabbits love to chew on apple wood and it helps keep their teeth in good shape.

Toys from the Store

If you really must buy pet rabbit toys, take a look at the hard plastic cat balls at the pet store. They have bells hidden inside. Just make sure you get balls made from hard enough plastic that your rabbit can't chew into it. Some of the larger cat toys are fun, too.

Tunnels, platforms and cat condos are great choices for your bunny. Wooden parrot toys with bells can be hung in your pet's cage so they can bat at it and make it ring. Large hard rubber balls made for dogs can be fun for your rabbit to roll around on the floor.

You can also go look in the baby section for pet rabbit toys. You can choose hard plastic baby toys like keys, rattles and other toys that are too hard to chew but make noise. You'd be surprised how much rabbits like to make noise.

Some pet stores sell woven sea grass mats. These mats make a nice floor covering for your rabbit's home, but they are also great fun for your pet to chew on and shred. These mats are usually very cheap, so replacing it isn't a big deal.

Don't be afraid to use your imagination. You want your pet to have lots of entertaining pet rabbit toys to keep him busy. Stuff things with hay and let them try to pull it out. How many toys can you find that you can stuff?

Just like dogs will worry at a toy with a treat stuffed inside, rabbits will do the same thing when you stuff something with hay. Now sit back and watch the fun antics. Make sure you have your camera ready.
